What we unblock in Utrecht

  • Drain unblocking service in Utrecht

Blockages in a toilet, kitchen, bathroom or sewer each need a different approach. As a drain unblocking company, we use drain snakes, high-pressure jetting and cameras, depending on the situation.

  • Toilet unblocking in Utrecht

The blockage could be in the bowl, the soil stack or the underground drain. We find out where the toilet is blocked first, then clear the drain thoroughly.

  • Kitchen sink unblocking in Utrecht

Grease, coffee grounds and food scraps slowly build up in the kitchen waste pipe until it blocks. We clear the sink and the pipe behind it, and flush it through with high-pressure jetting where needed.

  • Washbasin unblocking in Utrecht

Hair and soap residue build up in the washbasin trap and waste pipe. We clean both and find out why the basin was slow to drain.

  • Shower drain unblocking in Utrecht

Hair and soap scum build up in the shower drain and the pipe below it. We remove the blockage and clean the pipe along its full length.

  • Sewer cleaning in Utrecht

Grease, silt and root intrusion gradually narrow a sewer pipe. Our high-pressure sewer cleaning flushes the whole length of the pipe clean, and we show you the cause.

  • Drain camera inspection in Utrecht

Recurring blockages always have a cause. A drain camera inspection lets you see live whether roots, subsidence or a broken pipe is to blame.

  • Downpipe unblocking in Utrecht

Leaves, moss and sand block the gutter, the downpipe or the pipe underground. We clear the whole route, so rainwater drains away again instead of running down your walls.

What makes drain unblocking in Utrecht different?

Utrecht grew from a medieval town centre into the fourth-largest city in the Netherlands, and that shows below ground. Around the Oudegracht, there are drains that have been adapted again and again over the centuries. In the working-class districts from around 1900, the original clay pipes are sometimes still in place, while Leidsche Rijn has modern plastic. An engineer working here needs to know all these systems, because the age of a building determines where a blockage usually forms and how best to tackle it.

Wharf cellars on the Oudegracht

In the city centre, drain unblocking in Utrecht often starts one flight of stairs down. The wharf cellars along the Oudegracht lie below street level, just above the canal water. Many of them are now restaurants, cafés or homes. The waste water has to go uphill or travel a fair distance to reach the sewer, sometimes with the help of a pump. Grease from a restaurant kitchen, a full grease trap or a faltering pump can quickly cause trouble. We use compact tools and long hoses there, so we don't have to haul equipment through a dining room full of guests.

Street trees in the Rivierenwijk and Abstede

In the pre-war streets of the Rivierenwijk and in Abstede, the trees are as old as the houses. Their roots find their way into the joints of old sewer connections, especially in dry summers. A single small root is harmless at first, but within a few years it grows into a clump that holds on to toilet paper and grease. The pattern is easy to recognise: once unblocked, the drain runs perfectly, then a few months later the gurgling starts all over again.

From Zuilen to Leidsche Rijn: blockages by district

A blockage looks different depending on when a home was built. These are the districts we visit most often for drain unblocking in Utrecht, and what we usually find there.

Working-class districts in Noordwest

Zuilen, Ondiep and Pijlsweerd have lots of homes from the early twentieth century. Many have been altered several times over: a bathroom where a bedroom used to be, a kitchen moved to the back. The new waste pipe is then connected to an old underground drain with very little fall. Dirt settles there, and over time the passage becomes so narrow that a single wad of toilet paper is enough to block everything. In streets like these, the inspection chamber is sometimes hidden under paving slabs in the back garden or under a shed.

Walk-up flats in Kanaleneiland and Overvecht

Between the Merwedekanaal and the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal, and in Overvecht, there are many post-war blocks of flats. The residents on each stairwell share a soil stack. A blockage at the bottom makes water rise in the lowest flats, while the people higher up the building notice nothing at all. Here we often work through the rodding eye in the soil stack or the inspection chamber outside. We then jet the pipe along its full length, so that no residue is left behind in the bend into the underground drain.

Lunetten: home zones by the forts

Lunetten was built in the 1970s and 1980s, with home zones, family houses and plenty of greenery, close to the old forts of the waterline that gave the district its name. The sewers here are mostly plastic and easy to reach through inspection chambers in the front or back garden. Problems mainly arise in the garden pipe: a sunken paving slab above the chamber, leaves from the shrubs or a bend where grease and silt collect.

Leidsche Rijn and De Meern: plastic pipes and separate systems

The new builds in Leidsche Rijn have plastic pipes and usually a separate system for rainwater and waste water. Blockages here are mostly caused by what people put down the drains: wet wipes, frying fat and hair. A surprising number of residents also call us about a sewer smell from a drain that's rarely used, such as the one in a second bathroom, where the water seal has dried out.

Student houses: lots of residents, one drain

With both a university and a university of applied sciences, Utrecht has a lot of students, often living with plenty of housemates in one old building. The drains in a house like that were never designed for so many people. In the shared kitchen, fat from frying pans, rice and leftover pasta go down the sink, while wet wipes and cotton pads end up in the toilet. The result is a kitchen drain that blocks every few months and a toilet that starts gurgling at busy times. That's why, when we carry out kitchen sink unblocking in a house like this, we also clean the horizontal pipe behind the kitchen units, because that's where the grease is.

In a student house, report a blockage to the landlord or managing agent first; they're usually responsible for the pipes. If they can't be reached and there's water on the floor, you can call us directly. Afterwards, agree as a house that fat goes in a jar and only toilet paper goes down the toilet. A fat jar next to the cooker works better than a note on the fridge.

How it works, in four steps

  1. Call 085 333 4698 at any time of the day or night.
  2. Tell us what's wrong: which drain, how long it's been happening and what you've already tried. We'll also ask whether it's a wharf cellar, a flat or a house.
  3. You get a price estimate and an expected arrival time. The engineer only comes out once you've agreed.
  4. On site, the engineer first establishes the cause, unblocks the pipe and shows you what they found, with advice on stopping it happening again.

The engineer is usually with you within the hour, although that depends on the time of day and how busy the roads around the city are. In the city centre, where car access is restricted, they sometimes have to park a little further away, and simply carry the machines they need in with them.

Sewer unblocking in Utrecht: your own pipe or the public sewer?

If you have a blocked drain in Utrecht, the location of the blockage decides who has to fix it. The split is roughly the same throughout the Netherlands. Whatever is on your own property, from the drains in the house to the garden pipe, is the homeowner's responsibility. The street sewer falls to the municipality, and usually so does the section of the connection under public ground. At the property boundary, there's often a rodding eye or inspection chamber that marks the dividing line.

On drain unblocking jobs in Utrecht, we regularly work in buildings where several homes share one soil stack. That pipe is then usually the responsibility of the VvE (owners' association) or, in rented homes, the landlord. Let the building manager know there's a blockage and ask the neighbours to go easy on the water for a while. Afterwards, the engineer tells you where the blockage was, so it's clear who should pay.

From wharf cellar to garden drain: emergencies in Utrecht

Sewer smell after the summer holidays

Come home after a few weeks away and the bathroom smells of sewage? Often it's because the water seal in a floor drain or washbasin has dried out. Run all the taps and the shower for a while and flush the toilet. If the smell hasn't gone within an hour, there may be a partial blockage or a loose coupling behind it.

A flooded garden inspection chamber in Lunetten

If the inspection chamber in your garden is full to the brim, the blockage is between that chamber and the street sewer. Use as little water as possible indoors, because everything you send down the drain now ends up in that chamber. Clear the cover so the engineer can get to it straight away.

A full sink in a wharf cellar at lunchtime

If the sink in a wharf-cellar kitchen fills up, stop running water down that drain and switch off the dishwasher. Check whether the grease trap or the pump is showing a fault. The engineer cleans the pipe with high-pressure jetting; for regular maintenance, you can ask for a quote in advance.

Our services as a drain unblocking company in Utrecht

A large part of our work in Utrecht comes down to a handful of jobs. If the toilet is blocked in a student house or walk-up flat, it's a case for toilet unblocking, often with a blockage that reaches right into the soil stack. In the bathrooms of pre-war homes, where the shower was fitted later, shower drain unblocking is a recurring job: too little fall and lots of hair make a bad combination.

If a blockage keeps coming back, we want to know why. A drain camera inspection shows whether roots, subsidence or a broken pipe are involved. If the pipe is simply dirty, high-pressure sewer cleaning gets it clean along its full length. You can read more about how we work as a drain unblocking service on the service page.

What drain unblocking in Utrecht costs

Unblocking costs from €129. The call-out charge comes on top; it isn't included in that price, and we'll tell you what it is before the engineer sets off. For an emergency job in the evening, at night, at the weekend or on a public holiday, the out-of-hours rate applies. For work in a wharf cellar with a long pipe, or a complete inspection and clean of a garden sewer, ask for a quote in advance. You'll still get a price estimate first. Customers rate us 5/5 based on 48 Google reviews.

How to keep your drains clear

If your drain is blocked and you're waiting for the engineer, stop using that drain altogether and switch off the dishwasher and washing machine. By all means try a plunger, but leave the bottle of chemical drain cleaner alone: it rarely works on a blockage that's deeper down, and it makes the engineer's job riskier. To stop it happening again:

  • after cooking, pour fat and oil into a jar or bottle and put it in the general waste;
  • fit a hair catcher in the shower drain and clean it every week;
  • run water down drains you rarely use every now and then, so the water seal stays topped up;
  • if you live in a pre-war home with trees nearby, have the sewer connection checked with a camera at some point.

Don't forget the downpipe either. Utrecht has many streets with old trees, and in autumn the gutters fill up quickly. If the gutter overflows when it rains, clear out the leaves or have the downpipe jetted through before water runs down the front of the house and soaks into the walls.

Questions about drain unblocking in Utrecht

Can you unblock a drain in a wharf cellar on the Oudegracht?

Yes. Wharf cellars lie below street level, and the drainage sometimes runs through a pump or a long pipe under the wharf. The engineer brings compact tools that fit down a narrow cellar staircase, plus a high-pressure hose long enough to clean the whole pipe. In restaurant kitchens, we check the grease trap as well.

Why does the drain in my new-build home in Leidsche Rijn smell of sewage?

Often the water seal in a rarely used drain has dried out, for example in a guest bathroom or the drain by the washing machine tap. Run the tap for a while and see whether the smell goes away. If it lingers, a partial blockage or a loose coupling could be the cause. The engineer tracks that down and puts it right.

How much does drain unblocking in Utrecht cost?

The basic price for unblocking is from €129; the call-out charge isn't included. An out-of-hours rate applies in the evening, at night, at weekends and on public holidays. For cleaning a longer stretch of sewer or an extensive camera inspection, you can ask for a quote. You always get a price estimate before the engineer starts work.

How do I know whether tree roots are blocking my sewer?

If a blockage keeps coming back, especially in a pre-war home with trees in the street or the garden, root intrusion is the obvious suspect. A camera inspection lets you see it with your own eyes on the screen. The engineer can then cut the roots out and advise you on repairing the damaged joint.
