Drain unblocking service in Hoofddorp
Drain Unblocking Hoofddorp
Drains behave a little differently in a polder, which is why drain unblocking in Hoofddorp is often about more than just removing a blockage. We know the soft ground of the Haarlemmermeer and where pipes tend to subside. You can call us 24/7, including evenings and weekends. After a quick assessment and a price estimate over the phone, an engineer will be with you as quickly as possible, whether you're in Hoofddorp or one of the surrounding villages.

Toilet unblocking in Hoofddorp
The blockage could be in the bowl, the soil stack or the underground drain. We find out where the toilet is blocked first, then clear the drain thoroughly.

Living below sea level: what it means for your sewer
Until the mid-nineteenth century, the land where Hoofddorp now stands was covered by the waters of the Haarlemmermeer lake. Once the lake had been pumped dry, its bed became farmland, and later housing estates and business parks. That history still matters for drain unblocking in Hoofddorp: the ground here behaves differently from the sandy soils in the east of the country, and water is managed differently too.
Ground that slowly sinks
The ground in the polder is soft. Homes are built on piles and stay put, but gardens, driveways and streets sink along with the soil over the years. As a result, the pipe that runs from the front of your house to the main sewer gets dragged downwards at the street end. Part of the pipe starts to sag, creating a low point where water sits. Grease, soap and paper settle there and slowly build up into a blockage. Close to the wall of the house, the pipe can even kink or a joint can come loose.
The tricky thing is that you see very little of this indoors. All you notice is that the drain gets slower and slower, that the toilet sometimes gurgles or that a sewer smell lingers after a shower. Unblocking the pipe then solves the problem for a while, but as long as it sags, the blockage will come back. So in practice, drain unblocking in Hoofddorp often also means checking that the pipe still lies as it should.
Everything has to be pumped away
In a polder, nothing flows to the sea by itself. Pumping stations lift surplus water out of the Haarlemmermeer into the Ringvaart, the canal that rings the polder, and the waste water also has to be pumped up at points along the way. In a heavy downpour, the sewer has to deal with a lot of water in a short time. In low-lying streets, water can then be forced back up into garden drains, shower channels and cellars, especially if the sewer connection is already partly blocked. If you have a cellar or a basement flat, ask the engineer whether it would make sense to fit a non-return valve in the drain.
Typical blockages in Hoofddorp's districts
Hoofddorp is largely a young town. Most of its homes were built in the last fifty years, and that shows in the kinds of blockages we come across.
Bornholm, Overbos and the other older districts
The older expansion districts have lots of terraced houses with the kitchen at the back and a sewer connection that runs under the front garden or the pavement. After decades of use, grease has built up in the kitchen drains, and sunken garden pipes are common. A kitchen sink that empties slowly is often the first sign. In that case, the first step is unblocking the kitchen sink; if the problem turns out to lie deeper, we follow up with sewer cleaning of the whole pipe, right up to the street sewer.
Floriande, Toolenburg and Tudorpark
The younger districts have modern plastic pipes. Even so, we get call-outs from these areas too. Often it's a blocked shower drain caused by hair and soap residue, or a toilet that fills up because wet wipes have been flushed. In recent new builds, we regularly find building debris in the pipe, such as plaster, sealant or bits of packaging. If a blockage keeps coming back with no obvious cause, a camera inspection shows what's inside the pipe and whether it's starting to sag.
The centre: old village core and flats
Along the Hoofdvaart canal and the Kruisweg, there are still buildings from the days when Hoofddorp was a polder village. Their kitchens and bathrooms have often been renovated more than once, and new pipework doesn't always connect neatly to the old drain. An extra bend or a reducer with a ridge inside is enough for paper and grease to get caught.
Around the Kruisweg and in the blocks of flats near the centre, lots of people live one above the other. The flats share a soil stack, and a blockage on the top floor can cause trouble further down. Where there are restaurants and snack bars at street level, their grease slowly narrows the pipes as well. We tackle a blocked toilet in a building like that from inside your own flat. If the blockage is in the shared pipe, we agree the approach with the VvE (owners' association) or the managing agent.
Sewer unblocking in Hoofddorp: what kind of sewer do you have?
If several drains are running slowly at once or the inspection chamber in the garden is full, you have a blocked sewer somewhere beyond your home. Before the engineer starts jetting, they want to know what kind of sewer they're dealing with. There are several different systems in and around Hoofddorp, and which one you have determines where they start.
Combined or separate system
In the older parts of Dutch towns and villages, rainwater and waste water usually go into a single pipe. Districts built later often have a separate system: one pipe for foul water from the house and another for rainwater from roofs and streets. If the downpipe has been connected to the foul water pipe by mistake, or the washing machine to the rainwater drain, that's known as a misconnection. It can cause problems in a cloudburst and lets soapy water end up in ditches and canals. If the engineer spots something like that while unblocking your drain, they'll tell you.
Pressure sewers in the countryside
If you live on one of the long polder roads or in the rural parts of the Haarlemmermeer, your home may be connected to a pressure sewer. The waste water then first runs into a pump chamber, which pumps it away in batches through a narrow rising main. A pump like that doesn't cope well with wet wipes, sanitary towels or grease. If the chamber fills up or an alarm goes off, use as little water as possible. A fault in the pump itself is usually a job for the sewer operator, but we can clear a blockage in the pipe from your house to the pump chamber.
Your section and the municipality's
The national rule of thumb applies in the polder too: up to the property boundary, the sewer connection belongs to the owner, and beyond it the municipality usually takes over. The municipality of Haarlemmermeer can tell you how that works at your address. If you rent, your landlord is your first point of contact, and in a block of flats, it's the VvE.
Emergency drain unblocking in Hoofddorp: shower channel, toilet and washing machine
A shower channel that won't drain
Newer and renovated bathrooms often have a shower channel instead of a round drain. It looks sleek, but the shallow trap tray under the grate catches hair, soap residue and threads from flannels. Lift out the grate and the tray and rinse them clean under the tap. If the water still won't go down after that, the blockage is further along the pipe, and we'll come out with a drain snake or machine.
Toys and wipes in the toilet
In homes with young children, things that don't belong there quite often end up in the toilet: a toy, a toothbrush or a whole toilet roll. If the toilet is blocked, don't flush again, because you'll only push the object further in. The engineer can often retrieve a stuck object from the trap in the bowl without removing the toilet.
The washing machine drain overflows
If your washing machine is in the attic or the utility room, it pumps its water into a standpipe or a trap on the wall. When that drain is blocked with lint and soap residue, the water overflows as the machine pumps out. Switch the machine off straight away and put down towels. Lint from clothes builds up in the first few metres of pipe; a drain snake followed by a thorough flush gets the drain running freely again.
Six steps from your call to a solution
When you call a drain unblocking company about a blocked drain in Hoofddorp, you want to know where you stand. Here's how it works with us:
- You call 085 333 4698, even at night or at the weekend.
- We ask about the problem: which drain, since when, and whether water is coming back up in other drains.
- We give you an assessment of the problem and a price estimate straight away.
- An engineer heads over; in Hoofddorp, they're usually with you within the hour.
- On site, they find the cause and clear the drain with the right technique, from a plunger and drain snake to an electric drain machine or a high-pressure water jetter.
- We explain what the problem was and how to prevent the next blockage.
If the engineer suspects that a pipe has subsided, they'll discuss it with you. Sometimes a camera inspection makes sense straight away; sometimes it's wiser to see first whether the problems return after cleaning.
Prices for drain unblocking in Hoofddorp
Unblocking costs from €129, call-out charge not included. Outside office hours, meaning in the evening, at night, at weekends and on public holidays, an out-of-hours rate applies. For bigger jobs, such as cleaning and inspecting an entire sewer pipe under the garden and driveway, you can ask for a quote. You always get a price estimate in advance and decide for yourself whether we go ahead.
Why a price estimate rather than one fixed amount for every job? Because a blockage in a trap is cleared in no time, whereas a sunken garden pipe takes longer and needs different equipment. By listening carefully first, we can give you a fair estimate. Customers rate us 5/5 based on 48 Google reviews.
Limiting the damage yourself
Until the engineer arrives, these steps help stop things getting worse:
- Stop flushing and switch off appliances that discharge water, such as the dishwasher.
- Lift the grate off the shower channel or shower drain and remove any hair you can see.
- Have towels ready if the toilet is full to the brim.
- Check whether the inspection chamber in the garden is full of water; if it is, the problem is probably outside.
A sunken pipe will always be prone to blockages, so don't flush grease, wipes or food scraps. A hair catcher in the shower and a container for used frying fat take very little effort. If the problems come back after unblocking, have the pipe inspected before more serious damage is done.

Questions about drain unblocking in Hoofddorp
Why does my drain in Hoofddorp keep running slowly?
The ground in the Haarlemmermeer is naturally soft. Homes are built on piles, but gardens and pipes sink with the soil over the years. That can create a low point in the sewer connection where water and dirt collect. A camera inspection shows us whether that's happening at your home and what the best solution is.
What determines the cost of unblocking a drain in Hoofddorp?
A straightforward unblocking job starts at €129, call-out charge not included. The final cost depends on where the blockage is and how much work it takes. Outside office hours, an out-of-hours rate applies, and for bigger jobs you can ask for a quote. You'll always get the estimate over the phone first.
Do you also cover Nieuw-Vennep, Badhoevedorp and Vijfhuizen?
Yes, we work throughout the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, so as well as the districts of Hoofddorp, we also come out to the surrounding villages. How long it takes us to reach you depends on the time of day and the traffic, but the engineer is usually with you within the hour. When you call, we'll tell you what to expect.
My toilet gurgles when the neighbours' washing machine empties. Why is that?
That usually points to a pipe that's partly blocked or poorly vented. In some terraced houses, the drains from several homes join up before they connect to the main sewer. Air and water then look for another way out: through your toilet. We clear the pipe with a drain snake or a high-pressure hose, and a camera shows where the problem lies.
