Drain unblocking service in Gelderland
Drain Unblocking Gelderland
Drain unblocking in Gelderland calls for some knowledge of what lies underground, because a sewer behaves very differently on the sand of the Veluwe than on the river clay of the Betuwe. Afvoer Ontstoppen can be reached 24/7 across the whole province, from Nijmegen and Arnhem to Apeldoorn, Ede, Tiel and Doetinchem. You call, describe the problem and get a price indication straight away. An engineer then comes out with a drain-cleaning machine, high-pressure jetter and camera, usually within the hour.

Downpipe unblocking in Gelderland
Leaves, moss and sand block the gutter, the downpipe or the pipe underground. We clear the whole route, so rainwater drains away again instead of running down your walls.

Gelderland: sand, clay and rivers beneath your drain
Gelderland is the largest province in the country and also the most varied below ground. In the middle lies the Veluwe, a high ridge of sand where rainwater soaks away almost immediately. South of it the Rhine, Waal and Maas flow through a broad river region of heavy clay, and in the east lies the Achterhoek, with sandy soil, stream valleys and hedgerows. Each demands something different of a drain. On sand, pipes lie stable, but tree roots find every gap. On clay the groundwater is high and a pipe subsides more easily, leaving dips where grease and sludge settle.
Then there is the building history. Nijmegen, Arnhem, Zutphen and Harderwijk have old centres whose drains have been rerouted several times over the centuries, surrounded by pre-war and post-war districts and, on the edges, growing new estates such as the Waalsprong and Schuytgraaf. For drain unblocking in Gelderland we therefore always ask where you live and how old the house is: a vitrified clay pipe under a pre-war home needs a different approach from a plastic drain on a recent Vinex estate.
Sewer unblocking by region in Gelderland
Nijmegen: from the ridge to the Waalsprong
Nijmegen lies largely on an ice-pushed ridge, with the Benedenstad and the Waalkade at the bottom and districts such as Hengstdal and Brakkenstein high above. Drains here sometimes run to the sewer with a considerable fall, which helps the flow, but sand and debris pile up where the pipe levels out. Across the Waal, in Lent and Oosterhout, new homes stand on river clay with plastic pipes and high groundwater. For drain unblocking in Nijmegen we have a dedicated page with every district.
Arnhem: hills along the Rhine
The provincial capital is built against the southern flank of the Veluwe. In Arnhem-Noord, districts such as Klarendal, Sonsbeek and the Geitenkamp sit high up on sand; in Arnhem-Zuid, Malburgen, Elderveld and Schuytgraaf lie flat on the clay along the river. The height difference within the city is considerable, and it shows in the pipes: long and steep in the north, flat and prone to subsidence in the south. Our page on drain unblocking in Arnhem explains what that means per district.
Apeldoorn and the Veluwe
Apeldoorn is a green city on sandy soil, with spacious districts such as De Maten, Orden and Zuidbroek and plenty of trees close to the houses. Here it is mainly roots seeking out the outside drain and leaves filling the downpipes every autumn. We see the same picture in the Veluwe villages, from Epe to Ermelo. For the city itself, see drain unblocking in Apeldoorn.
The Betuwe: Tiel and Culemborg
Between the Waal and the Lek lies the Betuwe, with Tiel and Culemborg as its largest towns. The soil is river clay and the groundwater is high, especially in winter. Drains run noticeably slower after a wet spell, and a slightly subsided pipe holds water in which grease and sludge settle. The old centres also have vitrified clay pipes with shifted joints; in new-build such as Parijsch near Culemborg the pipes are plastic, but on the same soft clay.
Achterhoek and IJssel: Doetinchem and Zutphen
The Achterhoek is sandy soil with stream valleys and hedgerows. Doetinchem has homes from every post-war decade, each with a different type of pipe, while Zutphen, a Hanseatic town on the IJssel, has listed buildings with cellars where a backing-up sewer soon becomes visible. High water on the IJssel can temporarily hamper drainage from lower-lying buildings.
Gelderse Vallei and the edge of the Veluwe: Ede, Barneveld, Wageningen and Harderwijk
Ede and Barneveld lie where the sand gives way to the lower Gelderse Vallei, with long garden drains and many businesses whose drains carry grease and sludge. Wageningen has many subdivided student houses where one shared drain takes a heavy load. Harderwijk combines an old Hanseatic centre with new-build on the Veluwemeer, where pipes lie flat and the water is close by.
Drain unblocking in Gelderland: common blockages
Roots in the outside drain
On the Veluwe and in the leafy districts of Apeldoorn, Ede and Arnhem-Noord, roots from trees and hedges seek out the moist outside drain. They get in through a gap at a joint and form a tangle that catches paper. You notice it when an inspection chamber empties slowly or the toilet gurgles. Meanwhile use as little water as possible and check whether the chamber at the property boundary is full. The engineer cuts the roots away with the high-pressure jetter, flushes the pipe clean and uses the camera to see where the pipe is damaged.
A slow drain after a wet spell in the river region
In Tiel, Culemborg and the villages along the Waal and the Rhine, the shower or kitchen sink sometimes suddenly runs slowly after a wet week. Often the street sewer is then fuller than normal, so your house connection (lateral) discharges less easily. If the water still stands in dry weather, the blockage is in your own pipe. Tell us on the phone whether it rained heavily beforehand; the engineer first checks the chamber by the front wall and then works inwards.
A blocked toilet in a subdivided building
In student houses in Wageningen and Nijmegen and in subdivided buildings in Arnhem, several toilets discharge into one drain. If the toilet is blocked, do not flush again, close the isolating valve to the cistern and warn your housemates. The engineer uses a toilet auger or a small machine and follows the pipe down until the blockage is gone.
Drain unblocking service for the whole of Gelderland
As a drain unblocking service we come to every municipality in the province, from the Achterhoek to the Betuwe and from the Veluwe to the Land van Maas en Waal. These are the jobs we see most often:
- A toilet that overflows or will not flush: toilet unblocking with an auger or machine, without chemicals.
- A kitchen sink clogged with grease and food waste in the trap and kitchen pipe: kitchen sink unblocking.
- Roots, sand or sludge in the house connection: sewer cleaning with the high-pressure jetter.
- Recurring problems or a suspected fracture: a drain camera inspection shows what is happening underground.
Who is responsible: owner, owners' association, landlord or municipality
If you own your home, the drains inside the house and the pipe on your own land are your responsibility, up to the inspection chamber or access fitting at the property boundary. Beyond that lies the municipal sewer; exactly where the boundary runs varies by municipality in Gelderland. In a block of flats or a subdivided building, the soil stack and the shared collector drain fall under the owners' association (VvE) or the landlord. If you rent, a blockage caused by your own use is often at your expense, but a subsided or broken pipe is the landlord's problem. Water from the street or a ditch is a matter for the municipality or the water board. Afterwards the engineer explains what he found, so you can report it to the right party.

Questions about drain unblocking in Gelderland
My garden inspection chamber in Tiel overflows after every wet week. Is it my drain or the ground?
On the river clay of the Betuwe the groundwater is high, especially in winter. The sewer in the street then fills up faster and your house connection (lateral) struggles to discharge. If the chamber also empties slowly in dry weather, there is a blockage or a subsided section in your own pipe as well. A camera inspection shows us which of the two it is, so we can clean the pipe where it matters.
What does drain unblocking in Gelderland cost?
Unblocking a drain costs from €129. The call-out charge is not included and is billed separately. If you call in the evening, at night or at the weekend, an emergency rate applies. For bigger jobs, such as cleaning a long outside drain under an old building in Zutphen, you can ask for a price in advance. In every case you hear the price indication before the engineer starts.
Roots are growing into the drain in my garden in Apeldoorn. How do you get them out?
On the Veluwe sand, roots from trees and hedges seek out the moist outside drain and work their way in through a gap at a joint. The engineer cuts them away with a high-pressure jetter fitted with a special root-cutting head and then flushes the pipe clean. With the camera we check where the roots got in, so you know whether that section needs repairing to stop it happening again.
I live in a student house in Wageningen and the shared drain is blocked. Who has to sort that out?
In a subdivided building several kitchens and toilets discharge into one drain, and that drain is usually the landlord's responsibility. Report it there, but do not wait to call if the water is rising: we also come out at a tenant's request. In the meantime use as little water as possible and warn your housemates, so that nothing more ends up in the pipe.
