Drain unblocking service in Friesland
Drain Unblocking Friesland
Drain unblocking in Friesland calls for knowledge of what lies underground: sea clay in the north, peat and water around the lakes, sand in the Frisian Woods. Afvoer Ontstoppen covers the whole province, from Leeuwarden and Drachten to Sneek, Heerenveen and Harlingen, and the Wadden Islands too. We can be reached 24/7. You call, describe the problem and get an estimate with a price indication, and an engineer comes out to you with a drain auger, high-pressure jetter and camera.

Drain unblocking service in Friesland
Blockages in a toilet, kitchen, bathroom or sewer each need a different approach. As a drain unblocking company, we use drain snakes, high-pressure jetting and cameras, depending on the situation.

Toilet unblocking in Friesland
The blockage could be in the bowl, the soil stack or the underground drain. We find out where the toilet is blocked first, then clear the drain thoroughly.

Downpipe unblocking in Friesland
Leaves, moss and sand block the gutter, the downpipe or the pipe underground. We clear the whole route, so rainwater drains away again instead of running down your walls.

Friesland: clay, peat and a great deal of water
Below ground, Friesland has roughly three zones. Along the Wadden coast and in the north lies heavy sea clay, the old mound country around Leeuwarden, Franeker and Dokkum. The middle and south-west is low peatland with the Frisian lakes, bordered by Sneek, Joure and Heerenveen. In the south-east, in the Frisian Woods around Drachten, Beetsterzwaag and Gorredijk, sand comes to the surface. Between them runs a network of waterways, canals and lakes that gives the province its character and keeps the groundwater high almost everywhere.
For drain unblocking in Friesland, that ground makes a difference. On clay, rainwater hardly soaks away, so the sewer fills up quickly in a downpour. On peat, house connections (laterals) subside and dips form in the pipe where dirt settles. On sand, the groundwater is lower and blockages mostly start indoors: grease, hair and wipes. Add the building history: old town houses with drains from several renovations, post-war estates with vitrified clay pipes under the garden, and new-builds with plastic pipework. That is why we always ask on the phone which town you live in and what kind of house it is.
Sewer unblocking by region and town
Leeuwarden
Leeuwarden's old centre is full of canal houses and town houses where kitchens and bathrooms were added later. Drains run with little fall through the joists, with bends where grease catches. In the post-war flats of Bilgaard residents share a soil stack, so a blockage at the bottom comes straight back up at the ground-floor neighbours. Camminghaburen and Zuiderburen are younger and have plastic pipes, but sit low and wet; after a rainy week we hear more about sluggish drains there. The engineer picks his tools to match: a thin auger in an old building, the jetter in a long outside drain.
Drachten and the Frisian Woods
Drachten was largely built after the war and sits where the peat meets the sand. Estates such as De Wiken, De Drait and De Venen have many family homes from the 1960s and 1970s, with pipes now at an age where joints start to shift. In the leafy villages of Opsterland and Smallingerland around it, outside drains run a long way through the garden and the roots of oaks and birches seek out the joints. A camera inspection shows exactly where the root has got in.
Sneek and the lake district
Sneek has an old core around the Waterpoort and its canals, with estates from every post-war decade beyond it. Across the lake district, from Sneek and Bolsward to Joure and Lemmer, the groundwater is high and many homes stand right on the water. Drains lie almost level and run slowly; a little grease or hair is enough to close them off. At marinas and holiday homes, add long shared pipes that handle far more in the sailing season than in winter.
Heerenveen
Heerenveen grew up on excavated peat and expanded through the twentieth century, with estates from the 1960s to recent new-builds. On the soft ground, subsided house connections are a familiar sight: the pipe sinks with the soil, the connection to the street sewer does not, and dirt collects at the kink. If your toilet keeps flushing slowly and unblocking only helps briefly, there is often a dip like that in the pipe.
Harlingen and the Wadden coast
Harlingen is a harbour town behind the Wadden dyke, with warehouses, narrow streets and old canals. Salty air and wind eat into cast-iron chamber covers and old vents. On the clay behind the dyke, as in Franeker and the mound villages towards Dokkum, water stands in the gullies long after rain and garden chambers overflow. We work on the Wadden Islands too: Terschelling and the others have their own sewer systems, under heavy load from holiday visitors in high season.
Common blockages in Friesland
With drain unblocking in Friesland, three calls keep coming back. Here is what is behind them and what to do.
Water coming out of the chamber after rain
On clay and peat this is the complaint we hear most. First check whether the gullies in the street are full: if so, the sewer is simply busy and the water usually drains away within a few hours. If your own chamber stays full while the street is clear, something is stuck between your house and the main sewer. Use as little water as possible meanwhile. The engineer opens the inspection chamber by the front wall, jets the pipe through and checks with the camera for subsidence. If it keeps happening, we talk through a non-return valve.
A blocked toilet in an old town house
In the old houses of Leeuwarden, Sneek, Bolsward, Franeker and Harlingen, the toilet drain often takes a roundabout route downwards. Do not flush again, and turn off the small valve to the cistern. Put towels down, because on a wooden upper floor water soon seeps through to the neighbours. The engineer works with a toilet auger or small machine and, if needed, follows the pipe further down without opening a floor.
Grease in the kitchen pipe
From a farmhouse sink in the Woods to a café kitchen in Dokkum: grease sets in cold pipes and forms a hard crust that keeps closing in. Do not pour in chemical drain cleaner; it damages seals and rarely dissolves a grease plug. Run hot water through first and undo the trap over a bucket. If the plug is further along, the engineer removes it mechanically and flushes the pipe clean to the outside wall.
Our drain unblocking service in Friesland
As the drain unblocking company for the whole province, we handle anything to do with blocked drains. Most requested:
- Toilet that overflows or flushes slowly: toilet unblocking with an auger or small machine, in old town houses too.
- Sink that holds water: kitchen sink unblocking, including cleaning the trap and kitchen pipe.
- Subsided or silted-up outside drain: sewer cleaning with the high-pressure jetter, from front wall to street sewer.
- Recurring problems with no obvious cause: a drain camera inspection shows cracks, roots and subsidence.
Who is responsible: owner, owners' association, landlord or municipality
As a homeowner you are responsible for the drains inside the house and for the house connection (lateral) on your own land, usually as far as the inspection chamber or rodding point at the boundary. Beyond that lies the municipal sewer; exactly where the line falls varies from one Frisian municipality to the next. In flats such as those in Bilgaard, or in subdivided buildings in Sneek, the soil stack and collector pipe are normally a matter for the owners' association (VvE) or the landlord. If you rent, a blockage caused by your own use is often at your expense, but a subsided or broken pipe is the landlord's. The water board manages the ditches, waterways and pumping stations that drain the polders, not the sewer in the street. Afterwards the engineer tells you what he found, so you can report it to the right party.

Questions about drain unblocking in Friesland
After a downpour the inspection chamber in my garden in Franeker is full. Is that the sewer?
On the heavy clay around Franeker and Leeuwarden, rainwater can hardly soak into the ground, so in heavy rain the sewer has to take a lot of water in a short time. If your chamber only fills up during or just after rain, water is backing up from the street. If it stays full in dry weather too, there is a blockage in your own pipe. The camera tells us which of the two it is.
What does drain unblocking in Friesland cost?
Clearing a blockage costs from €129. The call-out charge is not included and is added separately; in a province as spread out as Friesland, you hear that amount in advance. Outside office hours, in the evening, at night and at the weekend, an emergency rate applies. For bigger jobs, such as cleaning a long outside drain at a farmhouse, you can ask for a price first. The engineer only starts once you have agreed to the price indication.
Our holiday home on Terschelling has a blocked drain. Do you come to the islands too?
Yes, we work across the whole of Friesland, so the Wadden Islands are included. Bear in mind that the engineer depends on the ferry, so the arrival time differs from the mainland; we discuss that over the phone. In the meantime, stop running water into the drain and let the caretaker or letting agent know an unblocking is planned, especially if the property is connected to a shared pipe.
The shower in our house on the Sneekermeer has been draining slowly for weeks. What is behind it?
Close to the water the groundwater is high and pipes often have little fall, especially in older homes and converted farmhouses. Hair and soap residue then build up faster in the shower drain. Start by lifting out the grate and checking the trap. If that does not help, the engineer clears the pipe mechanically and uses the camera to see whether subsidence or too little fall is the cause.
